How to Prepare for an Apartment Puppy
If you are thinking of adding a puppy to your family but you live in an apartment, there’s no need to fret – no one single bit. All you need to do is some well-thought-out research (a la this blog post) and to follow our tips. Here are five things you can do to make puppy apartment living easy and comfortable.
1. Check to see if your apartment has breed or weight restrictions.
Some puppy breeds are banned from apartments and even cities or counties. Take for instance, Rottweilers and Pit Bulls. They aren’t the most welcomed breed, despite their true and innate kind dispositions. They get bad reputations. At any rate, you need to confirm with your landlord or apartment complex if they have dogs that are restricted.
2. Purchase a crate and get educated on crate training.
Living with a puppy in an apartment brings a unique set of challenges. Your puppy will depend on you to provide training. Crate training is a great way to help your puppy get adjusted to your apartment. Crate training should be a comfortable experience for you and your puppy.
3. Locate the nearest park.
Most puppies need exercise, so there is no exception for apartment puppies. Now that you’ve committed to ownership, you should plan on taking your new puppy to the nearest park… often. They’ll need to burn off energy and it’s downright fun!
4. Purchase in puppy toys.
To keep your apartment puppies entertained when they’re left alone, purchase some toys. They will need them from being destructive and ruining stuff in and around your house! We’re sure you don’t want that and we’re sure you want to make your pup happy. Toys are fun and they give your dog mental stimulation. Kongs are one of the leaders in providing hours of entertainment for dogs when they’re home alone.
5. Purchase high-quality food.
Feeding your puppy high-quality food will ensure your puppy feels good and looks good! They should be low in fat and sugar and high in protein and nutrients. Sounds like human requirements, right?!

5 Things You Need for Small Dog Breeds
Big things come in small packages they say!
Small dog breeds are no exception. They are full of personality and refuse to be underestimated. When you commit to buying a dog that’s in the small dog breeds family, there are some things you should know that will be essential to raising happy and healthy little pups. We’ve got a list for that. Keep reading to learn more.
Potty Pads
Small dog breeds, especially those under 10 pounds, sometimes have a hard time holding their bladder. It’s best to invest in puppy potty pads. Of course, we advise that you train your pup, but having designated potty pads in certain areas of your home will encourage your pup to go there for elimination and save your carpet!
Doggy Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
There’s something about small dog breeds that make them more susceptible to dental disease. We recommend that you purchase toothpaste and brushes and use them at least twice a week. As with any dog, it’s important, but smaller dogs really need extra dental attention.
Small Crate
Purchasing a crate for small dog breeds is a great idea. Not only does it give them a comfy and cozy place to relax but it will also encourage housebreaking.
Small Dog Breeds Food
This is very important. It is vital that you purchase and feed your small pup food that is appropriate for his age and for his weight. We can’t stress this enough. You must feed your small dog breeds food that is healthy and nutritional. There are no exceptions.
Dog Leash and Collar
Okay, we know that part of the reason you were probably attracted to small dog breeds is that they’re small and portable and aren’t in the way – understood! We must, however, say that their size doesn’t negate their necessity to be protected by wearing a collar or harness and being on a leash. For starters, it helps in training them, both housebreaking and with commands and secondly, they help you keep track of your dog’s location. When you purchase your collar or harness, make sure that you get the proper size – one that’s not too large or snug.
Whether they’re large or small, we love them all! We want you to be armed with the knowledge to care for your dogs in the best way possible. For more questions, give us a call!

- Labradors were officially recognized by the AKC in 1917 in their sporting group. They are accepted in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black with no additional markings.
- These are large breed dogs with an average weight of 55-75lbs and a lifespan of 10-14 years.
- Because of their working dog roots, the Lab is a very active breed. This means lots of walks, playtime and anything else you can think up daily. They work best with an active family, especially with children to help them get out all that energy!
- Even though their coats are short, Labs require brushing and de-shedding constantly to keep their undercoats looking nice.

- The Cavalier is extremely versatile as a dog breed. They are able to work well in smaller apartments or sprawling country farms. With minimal exercise requirements, the Cavalier can thrive almost anywhere!

- They typically weigh between 13-19lbs, with an average lifespan of 12-15 years. Cavaliers have a tendency to become overweight, so tread lightly with the treats and no human food, please!
- The Cavalier excels in agility and obedience show, however, they need a patient and consistent training regimen for housebreaking.
- Cavaliers are wonderful with children, which is sometimes hard to find with small breeds. They also make great therapy pets and work well with elderly people.
- Because of their slightly smushed faces, the Cavalier does not do well in the heat. Make sure to limit their time outside in the summer to keep them from overheating.

German Shepherds for Sale – Protective, Loyal and Perfect for Your Family!
If You Are Looking for a Family Dog with Protection Abilities, German Shepherd Puppies for Sale Are the Way to Go!
While the German Shepherd Dog is touted as America’s favorite police, guard and military dog, it isn’t all about work and no play! This is one of the most popular breeds in America and shows no evidence of slowing down. Arguably one of the most recognizable breeds of dog, the GSD is a stalwart companion and is considered extremely loyal, even past all of those good looks. Here at Frontier Pets, the German is one of our most sought after large breeds, and for good reason! There are so many personality traits that make the GSD a perfect four-legged addition to many families.
A closer look at the famous German Shepherd Dog:
- It probably goes without saying that the German indeed hails from Germany and was brought to the U.S. in 1907. They started out as herding dogs, but once it was realized their capacity for hard work, the GSD exploded on the scene as a premier service breed.
- The German has a couple variations on their coats, with sable and black and tan being the most common. However, they also come in black and silver, all-over black and white.
- Their coats are longish, but do not require clipping or trimming. As you can probably guess, German owners are in for a bit of shedding, so we suggest using de-shedding brushes weekly.
- They range in size from about 55lbs all the way up past 100lbs! Their lifespan is about 10-12 years.
- The German trains excellently, but does require a firm hand with that training. You must be consistent with training, they have a tendency towards doing what they want, instead of what you want!
- The German is an active outside breed, but curiously calm indoors. This makes the well-suited for apartment life as long as they get the exercise and mental stimulation that they need. A German kept indoors all the time may turn antsy or destructive, the need to be challenged.
- Germans are great with children. However, they need to be introduced to all manner of people and environments while they are puppies, otherwise they are very wary of unknown situations.
Like we said before, there are so many reasons to open your home to a German Shepherd puppy! We promise you won’t regret it! Want to check out all of our available German Shepherd puppies for sale? Take a peek at our available puppies page to see pictures or stop by the store for a snuggle!

French Bulldog Puppies vs. Other Bulldogs – The Showdown
Bulldogs of all types are in vogue, but French bulldog puppies seem to be rocketing in popularity. But what makes them take the top spot above all other bulldog breeds out there?
Currently, the French bulldog takes the AKC’s 6th spot for most popular breeds in America, up from 10th the year before. And for the rankings in New York alone, the Frenchie has been number one the last two years running! People are wondering why this funny little clown dog is stealing hearts all over, so we’re going to try and break it down into why we think the Frenchie is reigning supreme.
It’s the ears, right? Everyone loves the bat ears!
The French bulldog has a distinctive feature that no other bulldog can tout, those “bat-like” ears. Most bulldogs have ears that flap over, while the Frenchie’s stand straight up, giving them a built in radar capable of hearing the fridge open from anywhere in the house. It also gives them a very sweet looking face, despite their smooshed face and often crooked teeth. People can’t seem to get enough!
Small bodies, big personality.
Really, a Frenchie has similar traits to their larger brethren. They are often lazy, very lazy, typically very quiet and extremely affable. But they have an added benefit of being quite a bit smaller than any other bulldog. Having a breed with easier mobility means a lot to people, they want to take their dogs wherever they’re going and the small the dog, the easier the travel. However, you’re not sacrificing anything with the Frenchie. They are not frilly or dainty, they still have a bulldog heft to them, making them seem bigger that they really are.
Same old bulldog problems though.
Frenchies cannot swim. They can’t do heat…or cold for that matter. They snort. There’s snoring, lots of snoring. They even breathe loudly. If this sounds familiar, it should. Almost every kind of bulldog has these afflictions, but for true bulldog lovers, it’s part of the charm. However, the French bulldog rarely drools and they don’t typically have an extended teething and chewing period. They don’t shed as much, having two heavier seasons and then very minimal. And they have almost non-existent exercise requirements, unlike many other bully breeds. It’s pros and cons, people!
I’m sure we could go on about how awesome and huggable and precious French bulldog puppies are all day, but you’ve got things to do! Like head down to Frontier Pets and get kisses and cuddles from all our resident Frenchies, check out pictures on our available puppies pages right now!

Sheltie Puppies for Sale, Why You Need One of these Precious Pups!
Sheltie puppies for sale are some of the sweetest and most beautiful around and Frontier Pets has them!
The small, active Shetland Sheepdog, affectionately nicknamed the Sheltie, was once a Scottish farmer’s best friend: sounding the alarm when anyone approached the property, barking at birds and other animals to shoo them from the garden, and later, with crosses to Scottish herding dogs, keeping the sheep flocks in line. While at first glance they look like a smaller version of the Collie, the two are distinctly different breeds. Now, the Sheltie puppies for sale are mostly a family pet and very popular ones to boot!
Read on for more interesting facts about the Shetland Sheepdog:
- The Shetland Sheepdog stands between 13 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder, but it’s not unusual for them to be over- or undersize. A typical Sheltie weighs about 22 pounds, but a large one can weigh as much as 35 or 40 pounds. They have an average lifespan of 12-15 years.
- Shelties are loving companions for all members of the family, including the kids, but they can be reserved or even shy around strangers. Because of their protective nature, they’re quick to bark if they sense that anything’s amiss in their territory.
- Because of their intelligence, willingness to please, and athletic ability, Shelties excel at performance events. However, they have a drive to be active and they need several walks and playtime daily to be happy.
- They can do well in many different environments, as long as they can be near their owners and have ample playtime.
- While Shelties are very smart, you need to have patience while training them. Make training fun, with lots of affectionate pats and treats. Treats are always the best way to your pup’s heart!

- The Basset has a short, shiny coat that comes in typical hound colors: red and white and tri-color, with ticking being fairly common. They don’t require much grooming and are considered average to heavy shedders.
- The Basset hound is a friendly, outgoing breed. Originally used hunting with a pack, they tend to be good with other dogs and other pets. Bassets are people oriented and get along well with children.
- Because they are hound dogs, they have that deep baying bark typical of the category. They do better having a bigger environment and yard, even though they have minimal exercise requirements, as they like to wander scenting around.

Large breeds vs. small breeds, which is best?
Well, there is no right answer here and it really comes down to you. What’s your home environment like? Most large breed dogs need lots of space, but there’s always an exception! Think about a Great Dane that does great in small apartments or condos. And then vice versa, small breed dogs can usually thrive in small areas, if they have high exercise requirement, it might not work out. Many people just go with a breed that they’re used to, that they had growing up or that a family member has. However, this could be a mistake as the situation can be drastically different and another breed would fit better. We say try to keep an open mind when selecting a new puppy! Be accepting of new information, we’re here to help.

The Chihuahua breed is considered the smallest dog in the world, but you wouldn’t know it from their big personalities! And believe it or not, the Chihuahua wasn’t just popular from the fast food commercials of a few years ago, or the Legally Blonde movies. Chihuahuas are considered one of the oldest North American breeds still in existence and were actually considered sacred at one point in their histories, so they’ve been around the popularity block a time or two. Despite their many years in the spotlight, the ever saucy Chihuahua has some personality traits that might not go with every family. Because of their size, they need a lot of extra care and attention. Read further to find out more about this enchanting little breed! Want to see pictures of our precocious Chihuahua puppies for sale, check our available puppies page!
Check out some of the characteristics and personality traits of the famous Chihuahua:
- Chihuahuas are considered the ultimate companion. They like attention from their owners and are very loyal. Even though because of their size they are considered lap dogs, they are active and like to be played with.
- They come in two distinct coats: shorthaired, which is considered the most popular, and longhaired. The longhaired version has soft, very fine hair that feathers off their legs and ears. Chihuahuas can come in any color combination and are considered the “snowflakes” of the dog world as each one is unique.
- The have an average size that varies from 4-10lbs. Despite being such an old breed, they have no inherent health problems and have an average life span of 15+ years.
- Chihuahuas are good family pets when treated respectfully, but they have a reputation for being wary or aggressive with strangers or small children who may be threatening to their diminutive size. They tend to bond with one person, so it is important for the family to share in taking care of the puppy.
- The Chihuahua is considered an excellent guard dog. They will bark and “defend their households” against threats, despite not being able to do much being so tiny!
The Chihuahua can be a wonderful pet for many different people! But this was just a small look into what makes the Chihuahua breed tick. So if you’ve got more questions about our Chihuahuas for sale, never hesitate to give our Pet Counselors a call! Or come in today and see all of our adorable puppies in person.
